Setting annual goals with the regret minimization framework
Sam’s bi-weekly newsletter - Edition 03 - January 1st, 2024
One learning/discovery
For most of my twenties, I set an annual goal to meditate regularly. After 10 years of quitting after a week, I decided to take a more flexible approach.
Instead of aiming for perfection (7 days per week), I now use it as a tool for when I feel like I need it the most.
This 10-minute protocol by Andrew Huberman is a game-changer. It’s short enough that anyone can add it to their busy lives. And he doesn’t try to force you to ‘not think’.

One question
If I learn that I have cancer in five years, what will I regret the most not having tried this year?
With 2024 just starting out, a lot of us are rethinking our futures and setting annual goals. The question above has helped me find the courage to pursue what I truly want.
Here are 6 more questions I ask myself every year to review my long-term goals and then set my goals for the year.
One workout
I don’t know about you, but I ate plenty during the holidays and my discipline dwindled a bit. When that happens, I throw my workout plans in the garbage and do a ‘gut-check workout’.
It’s the most simple workout in the world:
Pick a movement you hate.
Pick a quantity that a sane person wouldn’t do (can be a number of reps, a total time, etc.).
Have fun and discover that you’re much tougher than you think.
For me, that’s 500 calories on the Airbike. I’m ready to crush the year after such a workout!
